Alterfin is a Belgian social co-operative. We give people and organizations a way to invest for social, environmental and economic impact.

What do we do?
Our co-op members’ capital finances two types of enterprises, both equipping farmers and entrepreneurs to build an economic activity of their own:
Microfinance institutions (MFIs) work at the heart of local communities and are a core part of sustainable development. They offer loans, insurance and savings products built for micro-entrepreneurs developing an economic activity. In these communities, traditional banking channels are often absent, or don’t meet these micro-entrepreneurs’ needs.
These partners range from co-operatives to small- and medium-sized agricultural enterprises. They create stable market opportunities for farmers and equip them with the tools to grow. They stimulate job creation in rural economies and enable producers to increase their income, to engage in sustainable agriculture and to build their resilience to climate change.
Loans let us leverage our capital: whenever a partner repays, we finance the next one.
Each repayment becomes capital for a new partner — a virtuous circle that grows our impact.
Where do we work?
We focus on low- and middle-income countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia. We invest in places where we can make a difference and we focus on areas where access to finance remains limited.
