A new collaboration. A new way to root your impact.Alterfin and SOWoods, together in Belgium.
Greening urban spaces is a gesture for the future — much like buying Alterfin shares for a loved one, transferring shares to them, or donating shares to the Alterfin Impact+ Program. So why not do both at once? From September 2026, Alterfin is launching a tree-planting campaign in collaboration with the SOWoods project.
Summer 2026 was the hottest our country has ever recorded.
We know these heatwave summers will become more frequent in the years ahead. Beyond working to curb climate change, we can also act to keep our environment liveable. One key measure is bringing nature back into urban areas. Green walls, hedges, and microforests — these are essential for creating shade, coolness, and biodiversity for people and animals alike.
Did you know that such cool zones can be 2 to 8°C cooler than their surroundings? A single tree also absorbs around 20 kg of CO₂ a year. And the more we de-pave, the more soil regains its capacity to absorb rainwater.
10 shares = 1 tree
Starting now, you can contribute to this essential greening effort.
For every block of 10 shares transferred to, purchased for, or donated to the Alterfin Impact+ Program (formerly AGF) between September 2026 and August 2027, SOWoods will plant one tree.
In practice, Alterfin will contribute to a collective planting fund, which will support one or more reforestation or agroforestry projects in Belgium. In August 2027, we will announce how many trees the new program has made possible. And to make it more tangible still, you'll have the option of planting the funded trees yourself.
What is SOWoods?
SOWoods works to bring nature back into urbanised and artificialised spaces by creating mini-ecosystems within them.
A few concrete examples:
In Jette, Ongena Square was transformed into a biodiversity sanctuary within a few years.
In Charleroi, staff at the Clinique Notre-Dame de Grâce (CNDG) planted trees and installed insect hotels and hedgehog shelters on the hospital grounds.
In Antwerp and elsewhere in Flanders, schools have been supported in creating micro-forests.
To date, SOWoods has planted more than 36,000 trees and plants, restored over 1.4 hectares of land, and helps manage 29.5 hectares of green space ecologically.
A shared vision
At Alterfin, we've always believed agriculture can feed people without destroying the land — through land restoration and agroforestry, among other approaches. A project like SOWoods, which applies agroforestry principles here in Belgium, is fully aligned with our values.
The Alterfin Guarantee Fund becomes the Alterfin Impact+ Program
If Alterfin were a wall built by thousands of cooperative members, each sharing a brick, the Alterfin Guarantee Fund would be the mortar between the bricks. It's essential to keeping the wall standing firm. Today, the AGF is evolving into the Alterfin Impact+ Program.
What actually happens to your Alterfin shares when you're no longer here? And how do you best approach your estate planning? To mark International Wills Day (13 September), notary Valérie Weyts answers a number of essential questions on a topic that remains genuinely difficult to broach. One thing is certain: this concerns everyone, because every major decision we make in life can have consequences for the future.
