CERA strengthens its commitment to microfinance through AlterfinTogether, creating greater impact for rural entrepreneurs.

According to the press release published on 13 May by CERA and BRS, the two organisations have jointly decided to discontinue the activities of BRS Microfinance Coop. CERA will continue its investments in microfinance through strengthened collaboration with specialised partners such as Alterfin.

Following a joint strategic reflection, CERA and BRS decided to discontinue the activities of BRS Microfinance Coop. Through an increased participation in Alterfin, CERA will continue to contribute to sustainable financing for rural entrepreneurs and farmers in the Global South. By simplifying their structure and strengthening the pooling of expertise, the organisations aim to further increase their impact.

Alterfin looks forward to continuing and deepening the collaboration developed with BRS over recent years, through CERA’s participation. This decision confirms the trust placed in our cooperative’s expertise and impact-driven approach. Together, we remain committed to inclusive finance, strong local institutions and sustainable economic development.

In the press release, Frederik Vandepitte, Chair of BRS Microfinance Coop and CEO of CERA, explains the decision as follows:

“We strongly believe in joining forces to increase the positive impact on the lives of rural entrepreneurs and farmers in the Global South. CERA will therefore strengthen its collaboration with the Belgian cooperatives Alterfin and Incofin Microfinance Fund, and will channel its investments in the microfinance sector through an increased participation in these two organisations.”

According to the press release, the dissolution of BRS Microfinance Coop will have no impact on the activities of BRS non-profit organisation. BRS will continue to focus on its core mission and pursue its work in training, advisory services and coaching for microfinance institutions.

“Investing in farmers means investing in the future of chocolate”

This year, Alterfin is joining forces with Oxfam to support the Bite to Fight project. Launched in 2018, the initiative aims to help 100 cocoa farmers from the CPR Canaan cooperative (a member of our partner Ecookim) achieve a living income. Oxfam hopes the project can serve as a model for the wider cocoa sector.

How did Alterfin contribute to the growth of EBO‑SACCO?

EBO SACCO, a savings and credit cooperative in Uganda, has grown significantly over the past two years. This growth is the result of a long trajectory supported by several organisations, including the Belgian organisations BRS and Trias. Alterfin then played a catalytic role in this growth story: by strengthening EBO SACCO’s credibility at the right moment, we helped the cooperative attract other investors and ultimately increase its impact. This is confirmed by our impact study, a tool we specifically developed to measure the added value we bring to our partners.

Women shaping coffee and leadership in Nicaragua

In 2026, the International Year of the Woman Farmer brings overdue attention to a reality that has shaped agrifood systems for generations: women are central to agriculture. Yet their access to land, finance and decision-making remains unequal.
